Now that the world is starting to open back up, the first thing I had to do was get on a plane and get out of the states. Seems like everyone I knew was talking about how they loved “Cabo” or were planning on going there. For years it had been on my bucket list, so when I mentioned it to one of my girlfriends, she said “Lehgo!”
Since it was a small group, I looked to my old travel agent friend CheapCaribbean.com. Now for larger groups, I do suggest hiring a real travel agent and/or going with villas you can rent via Airbnb or Vrbo. CheapCaribbean is good for all-inclusive deals at resorts. We had used them for a girls trip to Puerto Rico at the St. Regis Bahia Beach in Rio Grande, and it was a steal. So I’m thinking, yeah give me that same energy! But I found out a few things about Cabo as I was booking the trip and especially once we landed. Let’s get into it…
1. Cabo San Lucas and Los Cabos Are Not the Same
I was “today years old” when I found out that Los Cabos actually encompasses the two capes (or cities) of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo – some even include Cabo Pulmo and Cabo del Este under Los Cabos. Our resort was in San Jose del Cabo, which is about 20 miles away from Cabo San Lucas and has more of a relaxed feel. So I’m glad I did excursions in Cabo San Lucas so I could shop and experience the lively downtown atmosphere. In both cities, the weather was gorgeous and the scenery was beautiful. Literally, a postcard! I think my favorite excursion was the boat ride to scenic Land’s End (you know, the screensaver of the beautiful rocks in the ocean that’s on everybody’s computer).
2. Every Day They Hustlin’
For those of you who may not be from the ‘hood and may not be accustomed to people trying to sell you any and everything, you better prepare yourselves. From the moment you get off the plane, while you’re at your resort and when you leave, you WILL be asked to come up off some of your money! It’s really no different than when you’re traveling in the Bahamas or Jamaica, but I would suggest that you book all your ground travel and excursions ahead of time so that when you’re pounced upon when exiting baggage claim, you can say “no thank you” to all the hustlers. And while you’re at your resort, I guarantee you will be asked to listen to a presentation about a timeshare. Oh and if the man with the iguanas puts one on your shoulder and you take a pic, be ready to give buddy some cash.
3. It Was Not as Hot As I Thought It Would Be
The desert terrain you see when flying in to the city actually fooled me. I immediately thought it would be “Las Vegas hot”… where sweat drips down your back when you’re just standing still. But can I tell you the weather was BEAUTIFUL!! We went in May, which is the best time to go because the humidity is low and rain is unlikely (the rainy, hot season is from August to September). It actually gets chilly once the sun sets, especially if you’re on the water (that breeze off the Pacific is no joke!). Also, when booking your hotel/resort, make sure the beach on the property is swimmable. Some of the beaches in the Los Cabos area are closed to swimmers because they aren’t safe (too many strong waves and undercurrents).
I definitely see why so many people fall in love with Los Cabos, and I’ve already put it on my list of return visits. So as far as my review, this vacation gets 4 out of 5 Black Auntie Vibes! 💁🏽♀️💁🏽♀️💁🏽♀️
