And Just Like That Season 1 Review

And Just Like That A New Chapter of Sex and the City

[SPOILER ALERT!] I hate to say “I told you so” but I knew true fans of Sex and the City (like me) would not be pleased with this revised version. I never want classic, legendary tv shows or movies to be rebooted. Call me a scrooge, but if something is good, leave it alone. And this show was more than “good” to me. I was the fan who actually hosted and attended watch parties! So to me, the odds of another version or reboot being better or just as good were always horribly low. To be honest, I wasn’t even excited about the movie versions of SATC (even though the first one in 2008 wasn’t that bad). And just like the guy you know you shouldn’t date, we saw the red flags with this reboot 🚩 No Samantha? The originator of “funky spunk”? Even still, I gave it chance. Let’s break the season down.

I guess the writers said “Oh y’all want more diversity? Here are all the Blacks, LGBTQIA, physically challenged, unicorns and leprechauns you ever wanted in the first five minutes. We throwing errthang up in here.” It was like who’s next down the Soul Train line?

Now don’t get me wrong, many feel the diversity was long overdue. For me, if Candace Bushnell didn’t surround herself with anyone outside her circle of Whiteness, then don’t lie about it. Fine with me – because when I write my own TV series, it might be Blackety Black Black and people better be okay with that, too (Lol, although I doubt it will be 😉 ). But to shove it down our throats all at once just felt forced. And while I love, love, love these new characters, they could have been woven into the storylines a lot smoother and with the grace they deserve.

And who is this insecure Miranda? Why is she fumbling all over her words with Dr. Wallace and these Black people when she was the only one to interact with somebody Black back in the day? Remember she dated Robert (Blair Underwood’s character… he was so fine). Oh and the old Miranda would have cussed Brady out a long time ago! Just saying.

Thank goodness Charlotte, Anthony and Stanford (RIP) are still true to character. Oh and the fashion. Carrie’s ‘fits are still FIRE!! 🔥 Lisa Todd Wexley is a close second! See… I’m finding the positive!

Something told me with all the mushy, lovey dovey scenes with Big that something was about to happen. I didn’t think the man was going to die, though! We waited all these years to know his real name and then once we get used to “John” he’s gone? That whole scene was troublesome to me because at one point, I thought he was responsive and maybe just had a stroke. And we’re supposed to believe Carrie didn’t bother to frantically call 911 to save the man she was running around town having an affair with and throwing up about years ago? Remember when he had that heart attack and she couldn’t even say the words “heart attack” without crying? Chile, please.

But it wasn’t just that scene, other interactions between the characters seemed off to me. “I couldn’t help but wonder…” something’s missing. It wasn’t until the end of the first episode that I realized what it was. Carrie’s voiceovers! That’s why certain scenes seemed so long and awkward… and cringey! She only says the one line at the end. We don’t have Carrie Bradshaw’s voice throughout the show telling us what she thought or making her funny little quips. Now we have to work hard to try to figure out who the new people are without her telling us. Baby, this is too much work!

Nothing brought me more life than Natasha looking good, glowing, raising two sons and reading Carrie like a book. 😄 Sis said I don’t want Big’s measly $1 million he left me in his will. Give it to charity. I’m good, boo. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Seema is no replacement for Samantha, but honey, she has resuscitated this series. Actually, if you put all the new characters in a series, without these old, annoying and boring original characters, that would be a show I could get into. Nicole Ari Parker, Sara Ramirez, Karen Pittman and Sarita Choudhury are GIVING in every scene!

On another note, how did Steve get so old, so fast? If they’re all in their mid 50s, we’re supposed to believe he can’t hear, and he’s not even trying to get him some from Miranda? I guess that one testicle he had is finally wearing out? Not that it would matter, now that Miranda’s in love with Che. I’m not totally surprised about it, but I AM surprised that Che is in love with her as well… or are they? Good for Che for calling Miranda out on her secret lover shenanigans, but does Che truly want an exclusive committed relationship? Playing the fool is bad, Miranda. But playing the old fool is even worse, girl.

So it’s just over a year and Carrie flew all the way to Paris to spread Big’s ashes and supposedly meets up with “Text-Only Samantha”. 🙄 I’m so over this unrealistic storyline! And to end the season, instead of another date with the really nice teacher, Carrie kisses the podcast producer dude that we only focused on in one episode (I don’t even remember his name). Really? And just like that…

(that being said, if there’s another season, I’ll still be watching. 😁)
